ASSET FORFEITURE UNIT CRACKS DOWN ON TEMBISA HOSPITAL CORRUPTION

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced that the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has secured and reserved two preservation orders on members of two syndicates involved in alleged fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital. The investigation was triggered by a report from the late Babita Deokaran, the former Chief Director: Financial Accounting at the Gauteng Department of Health, who was tragically assassinated on August 23, 2021. Her report highlighted suspected procurement irregularities within the hospital’s supply chain management.

According to Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA Regional Spokesperson for the Gauteng Division, on 14 August 2025, the AFU obtained an order related to properties owned by the Maumela syndicate, valued at approximately R326 million. These assets include luxury residential properties in affluent areas, as well as high-end vehicles such as Lamborghinis, a Bentley, and a yacht. On August 27 2025, AFU secured another order related to properties owned by the Mazibuko syndicate, valued at around R47 million. These assets include luxury residential properties and high-end vehicles, including three Mercedes-Benz vehicles worth R10 million and a Land Rover valued at R2 million.
