Selina Dlangamandla, a 64-year-old designer, has always been passionate about her work. She specializes in creating stunning traditional wear and intricate beadwork through her brand, Seli D Designs.Tragedy struck in 2012 when Selina lost her daughter. To cope with her grief, she immersed herself in her work as a form of therapy. It was during this challenging time that Councillor Maluleke offered her an opportunity to display her work at Busy Corner. Unbeknownst to her, this would mark the beginning of something extraordinary. With perseverance and resilience, Selina’s passion project flourished, ultimately leading to the establishment of a stall in Mall of Thembisa. As an elderly woman relying on a Support grant, which barely covers her needs, this business has been a lifeline. It enables her to take care of herself and meet her financial obligations. Despite her success, Selina faces exclusion due to her age, often being overlooked for opportunities. She expresses a heartfelt wish “I wish the Department Of Education can recognize the skills and handwork as some kids are not academically gifted but can create magic with their hands.” Her story is a testament to the power of determination and creativity.
