Bonga Mqonwa is the chairperson and coach of International F.C., a football club that is developing talent, disciplined players, and keeping them away from crime and drugs in the community of Thembisa. Originally from Kagiso in the West Rand, Coach Bonga has had a love for football since he was a kid and for him owning and coaching a team whilst helping future stars develop their skills and realise their potential is a dream come true.
International F.C. consists of 4 Divisions, under 8, 11, 13, and 15, respectively. “Each player is expected to obey the rules of FIFA Fair Play and must abide by the instructions or rules given by the coaches. Players are expected to be punctual for training, and if one is absent, they must give a reason. No bullying is acceptable, and all players must respect one another, ” the coach explains. He further adds that players must mentally be able to bounce back from losses or setbacks and wear the jersey with pride, knowing that they have a responsibility to win games and represent the community.
Some of the club’s highlights include the Under 11 side winning their first Silver Medals in the Easter Tournament hosted by the Lima Sports Programme. International F.C. was crowned champions of the Kings of Soccer Tournament. “Recently, we played in the Jerry Sikhosana Tournament, where we ok played games without a single loss, but we did not make it through due to the point system,” Mqonwa tells The Olifants.
While still taking in new players and committed to development, International F.C. is appealing to sponsors to help them turn their passion into even greater success for the youth they groom.
“At the moment, we are looking at developing our players’ skills, discipline, and teamwork while preparing ourselves for the upcoming tournament, which is going to be held on 24 August 2025 at Welamlambo Sport Ground. We are working on getting a sponsor to help us provide better equipment, cover transport costs, and food to create more opportunities for our youth,” says coach Bonga.
To those associated with International F.C., the coach imparts, “To my players, they must always give their best performance, don’t skip training, stay disciplined, and they will make it live. Supporters, their encouragement is what keeps us moving. We really appreciate them, and they will always be in our hearts and minds. Community, we are building disciplined and talented young stars that you can be proud of. Sponsors, come and join us, together we can change lives via football.”
