The Tembisa Food Tour is a movement comprised of different businesses selling kasi foods (kotas, ribs, burgers, etc) and beverages. The movement is currently made up of 11 members who meet up every Thursday at a particular store and spend R100 or more. This, therefore, ensures that with ten (10) people supporting your business, you are guaranteed to make at least R1000 in sales on that day. As a member, you’re able to restock and buy business equipment like fridges, fryers, etc. “We’re a food tour group made up of individuals who are passionate about supporting and promoting local food businesses. Each week, we visit a different establishment to show support and help advertise their products and services.
This initiative has been truly rewarding, as it not only helps increase visibility for participating businesses but has also introduced us to many new customers and food experiences we hadn’t known before. We hope to grow bigger next year, and also be able to host food markets for the people who are part of this group,” explains Teboho Chere, cofounder of Tembisa Food Tour. The group realised that if others can come together, support each other and stock up, why can’t they in ekasi? Kasi is a big market, and the people love kasi food. They work together, not thinking as competitors, but as a group. Tembisa Food Tour is made up of founding members, Kgaugelo Manzini and Luthando Kalamshe, as well as Teboho Chere, Precious Motloung, Afrika Mabuza, Bathabile Ndlamase, Kamogelo Thule, Pholosho Mabollane, Makatso Kekana, andNesta. For those wanting to join the movement, unfortunately, the applications are closed for this year. However, interested parties can keep abreast with announcements and applications from the movement’s social media handles. “Our future plans regarding Tembisa are seeing the township economy working for township people, to see kasi business succeeding together without fear of competition, but having unity in serving people. We are also attracting creative tourists to Thembisa. We are next to the O.R. Tambo Airport, but we have no heritage to show. We have no food to offer to the world, and that must change.
We want tourists to come to and feel the love and taste of Thembisa, so the vision is big. The goal of the Tembisa food tour is to showcase the rich culinary heritage of the area, support local businesses, and provide a unique cultural experience for visitors,” concludes Chere.
