MBELE TRANSFORMS MAKHULONG PARK VISION

Simon Mbele is the founder of Makhulong Park, in Thembisa, officially licensed as SY Mbele’s Park, so as not to be confused with a municipal-based development or establishment. Mbele established Makhulong Park back in 1985 when he was still at school. “It is one space that I couldn’t believe up to today what it has become, actually. While I was still in high school, it was an ongoing project. I knew I couldn’t stay kwindawo engcolile.” He explains.

In 1994, while in standard 7. Simon came together with other community builders to clean the environment, taking the responsibility upon themselves to practice service delivery. It was befitting that when “Khehla”, as he is popularly known, studied Horticulture in his tertiary education, Makhulong Park became a huge part of his practicals in terms of the know-how and upkeep of the park.

After the completion of the park project, there was a potential threat that municipalities then looked at Makhulong Park to build houses over. Withstanding the tempest, Mbele worked hard and was nominated in the top 10 as a community builder, and with the sub-prize, managed to put up fences and the infrastructure. This was necessary. “Actually, to modify the park, and put stability on it, and a safety net around the park, I had to because at some stage some people would come and vandalise the park,” he tells The Olifants.

Due to popular demand, the entity became the place to be for those who want to host social events. Amongst its highlights, Makhulong Park hosted the launch of Moses Molelekwa’s first album and DJ Sub’s latest album, as well as various social gatherings.Mbele, in running the venue, is working with Sis’ Portia and Sis’ Phuza, who are responsible for the décor and referrals. In addition, there are two extra staff members employed, giving back to the community. However, Khehla’s challenges include high municipal tariffs and people booking the venue and cancelling and expecting full refunds “On this end, I’m working on the percentages depending on the cancellation date. Most of all, the biggest challenge is the nyaope boys vandalising the establishment, requiring a beef-up of the security.

Nonetheless, the Makhulong Park with the festive season just around the corner, Simon assures the Thembisa community that Makhulong Park is the place to be.
